Some advices from Twiter
I learned these basic facts in Econ 101 way back in college. Put simply, the answer isn't to shift demand, it's to reduce demand. Want to reduce demand? Well, there are many ways, including moving closer to where you work, taking transit to work (the latter two assuming you still have a job), consolidate your errand trips, walk when things are within walking distance, and more, but all of these compare to the number-one-with-a-bullet way: get a smaller car. If everyone who drives a minivan, van, truck, SUV, luxury car, midsize car, full-size car, crossover, and similar for their day-to-day driving and commute trips were all to descend on their local auto dealers and trade for a smaller car that gets at least twice the gas mileage, demand would shrivel and prices would drop. It ain't gonna happen, though, because too many people think they "need" or are entitled to their big gas guzzlers. But if the car you drive gets less than 30, even 25 MPG, you have NO foundation on which to complain, because the high prices are YOUR fault. And no amount of deflection or denial will change this fact.
